Uppingham in Rutland is celebrating an even higher media profile than usual with statutory, business and voluntary sector representatives attracting awards in October.
In the 2020 East Midlands Women’s Awards Uppingham based County Cllr Lucy Stephenson, the only female member of Rutland County Council Cabinet and the Portfolio Holder for Transport, was voted best market town leader for 2020. In the same competition Uppingham businesswoman and media specialist Liz Clarke was voted top 2020 Female Senior Business Executive. Liz is also Deputy Town Mayor this year.
In the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced the same weekend, Rotarian Margaret Simpson (pictured), a Trustee of the E J Toon Charitable Trust, an Executive Member of the Uppingham Neighbourhood Forum and a lead volunteer in the town’s Emergency Plan Covid-19 response team was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM). Margaret is also a Director of the Beeches Resident’s Association. The Beeches was recently voted as the East Midlands Most Outstanding Neighbourhood.
Along with the repeated awards secured by UNF constituent organisation Uppingham in Boom, many see the repeated recognition as strong evidence of the town’s community spirit and sustainability in difficult times.
