The Uppingham community has again been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list with the awarding of a British Empire Medal (BEM) this month to Uppingham in Rutland resident Janet Thompson.
Among her many community roles, Janet is Chair of the Uppingham Neighbourhood Forum and a director of Uppingham First, and is very active in updating the Uppingham Neighbourhood Plan. A guide leader for many years and the founder of a Christmas Meals in Uppingham charity, Janet also manages to find time to be a volunteer driver with the Uppingham Hopper Community Bus.
Commenting on the award Uppingham First Secretary Ron Simpson said, “Janet fully deserves this national recognition. She is an exemplar in community service and epitomises the ‘service above self’ spirit to be found in Uppingham. Janet was very proactive during the Covid-19 lockdown and has chaired the town’s Covid -19 Community Emergency Plan Committee throughout. We are all very proud of her and delighted that her efforts have been recognised in this way”.
