End Polio Now Cycle Event
During the week of 16-23rd November, Rotarians around the world are taking part in the ‘Indoor Cycle Ride for End Polio Now’ with the aim of raising $10M for the Rotary ‘End Polio Now’ campaign. On 22 November between 9am and 7pm, the Rotary Club of Uppingham is holding a sponsored static cycle ride in the Falcon Hotel, Uppingham and invites participation by civic representatives, Rotarians and members of the public to cycle for a 10 minute stint with a view to completing 100 miles in the 10hr period with the aim of helping to raise funds and donations for ‘End Polio Now’.
To register for a 10 minute ride telephone 01572 822568, or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org or just turn up on the day.
Rotary’s ‘End Polio Now’ campaign has been running since 1985 when there were 365,000 cases of polio per annum in 125 countries. Today, polio is confined to just Pakistan and Afghanistan and hit a low in 2017 but has since spiked to 96 cases so far this year. It’s not all bad news because within the last 12 months polio has entered the certification period prior to eradication in Nigeria and the second of three polio viruses has also been declared eradicated, leaving only one virus requiring final eradication. We can and will ‘End Polio Now’ it just needs community support to continue funding the work to complete the job within the next few years.
Cycle is sponsored by Uppingham School Sports Centre.
