SUMMARY:Uppingham Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:It’s Coming Home!\nA picture containing 25 portrait photographs, dating from the 1860s/1870s is being returned to its original home in the Vaults Pub in Uppingham.  The picture hung in the pub for over 150 years and contains photos of the ordinary people who drank there at the time.  The original picture was bought by the Uppingham Local History Study Group (ULHSG) in 2012 when it was being sold in a local antique shop.  The late Peter Lane, one of the founder members of ULHSG bought it and it formed part of his extensive archive, which was donated to the History Group.\nTo coincide with the picture being reinstated on the walls of the Vaults, ULHSG is putting on an exhibition at the Falcon Hotel in Uppingham on Friday 6th of May 11am – 4pm.  It will display Peter Lane’s research into most of the characters in the photo.  Visitors can find out about these characters, the History of the pub and of the town – all illustrated with photos, and newspaper cuttings.  Marc Oxley owns many old postcards, illustrating the changes in Uppingham in the past century.  Marc will also be there to talk about the pictures on display.\nThe History Group has also been running an Oral History Project, recording the memories of townspeople, and unlocking many unrecorded facts about Uppingham.   Come along and find out what we have found out so far!! \nDo you have any photos of Uppingham people or places, programmes, memorabilia, letters in the past century?  We would love to see them!  Bring along any photos etc you may have of about Uppingham places and people – we scan them, and you keep them! \n

SUMMARY:Stilton Cheese Run 2022
DESCRIPTION:This nationally known classic vehicle run originally retraced the route, along the now quiet country lanes, taken to deliver cheeses from Quenby Hall at Hungarton in Leicestershire, where it was produced, to the Bell Inn at Stilton in Cambridgeshire, where it gets it’s name. The original route of 39 miles taken to deliver the cheese was by horse drawn carriage stopping off to make deliveries of cheeses at the various villages and towns along the route and was one of the longest commercial carriage rides until internal combustion engined vans and lorries took over as the main mode of commercial road transport. DESCRIPTION:This run originally retraced the route, along the now quiet country lanes, taken to deliver cheeses from Quenby Hall at Hungarton in Leicestershire, where it was produced, to the Bell Inn at Stilton in Cambridgeshire, where it gets it’s name. The original route of 39 miles taken to deliver the cheese was by horse drawn carriage stopping off to make deliveries of cheeses at the various villages and towns along the route and was one of the longest commercial carriage rides until internal combustion engined vans and lorries took over as the main mode of commercial road transport. DESCRIPTION:During the week of 16-23rd November, Rotarians around the world are taking part in the ‘Indoor Cycle Ride for End Polio Now’ with the aim of raising $10M for the Rotary ‘End Polio Now’ campaign. On 22 November between 9am and 7pm, the Rotary Club of Uppingham is holding a sponsored static cycle ride in the Falcon Hotel, Uppingham and invites participation by civic representatives, Rotarians and members of the public to cycle for a 10 minute stint with a view to completing 100 miles in the 10hr period with the aim of helping to raise funds and donations for ‘End Polio Now’.\nTo register for a 10 minute ride telephone 01572 822568, or e-mail rons@clara.net or just turn up on the day.\nThe Campaign\nRotary’s ‘End Polio Now’ campaign has been running since 1985 when there were 365,000 cases of polio per annum in 125 countries. Today, polio is confined to just Pakistan and Afghanistan and hit a low in 2017 but has since spiked to 96 cases so far this year. It’s not all bad news because within the last 12 months polio has entered the certification period prior to eradication in Nigeria and the second of three polio viruses has also been declared eradicated, leaving only one virus requiring final eradication. We can and will ‘End Polio Now’ it just needs community support to continue funding the work to complete the job within the next few years.\nCycle is sponsored by Uppingham School Sports Centre.\n

DESCRIPTION:The Rotary Club of Uppingham and the Rutland Big Band have announced a major musical collaboration in support of the Uppingham Hopper.\nOn Monday July 1st in the Garden Terrace of The Falcon Hotel, Uppingham, the Rutland Big Band will provide an evening of entertainment big band style featuring many of the nation’s favourite dance and swing pieces. Get a taste of the big band sound at www.rutlandbigband.org.uk ( http://www.rutlandbigband.org.uk )\nA Big Band traditionally has saxophones (baritone, tenors & altos), trumpets, trombones, a rhythm section (drums, bass, keyboard, guitar), and often a singer or two. Sometimes there are clarinet or flute parts, usually played by one of the saxophonists. This helps make the famous Glen Miller type of sound.   Naturally there’s 1940s swing era music such as Glen Miller but also a glorious mix of music by Stevie Wonder, Van Morrison, Duke Ellington and of course tracks made famous by the Rat Pack.\nIt don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got swing.
