Row Looming Over Car Parking Charges PDF Print E-mail

Uppingham businesses have expressed alarm at a proposal from Rutland County Council to increase parking charges  from 20p to 70p per hour in Uppingham. The objective appears to be to bring Uppingham in line with Oakham. At present the car parks make a loss.

Questioned on a possible way forward that did not have the potential to inflict the expected damage to local businesses by more than trebling hourly charges, Ron Simpson, Chair of the Uppingham Business Forum said, " In trying to balance the books the County Council needs to go back to basics. The car parks are incurring a loss partly because of the cost of collection charges. RCC  should  think outside the box and reinstate free car parking in Uppingham thereby giving a boost to the local economy".
