altRutland residents have been thanked for their outstanding generosity following the record breaking donation of over 200 gifts to needy children in the Melton and Rutland area.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Uppingham, the annual collection of gifts is destined for local charity Home-Start Horizons which is based in Melton Mowbray. Pictured is Club Member Margaret Simpson (right) handing over some of the gifts to Helen Benzie at the charity. The gifts were collected from the Uppingham and Empingham Surgeries, the Uppingham Market Place Dental Surgery, and The Falcon Hotel, all long standing supporters of the scheme.

Such was the volume of donations this year that Rotary Club Secretary Keith Edwards of Oakham had to tour the donation sites in a large van to transport the gifts.  Chair of Rotary's Community and Vocational Committee, Ron Simpson BEM said, "Time and time again the Rutland community demonstrates just why this county is one of the most desirable places in the UK to live. Christmas is a time of giving. It is heartwarming to see such solid evidence of community spirit. I have no doubt that this generosity and compassion will bring a smile to many a child's face. A big thank you to everyone who donated gifts."

The visit, organised by the Beeches Residents' Association, is the last in a busy year for the Association with its entry to the East Midlands in Bloom 'Its Your Neighbourhood' scheme confirming an independent judge's opinion that The Beeches is a 'thriving' neighbourhood.  A challenge cup quiz and community barbecue are planned for 2018.
