Market Place Delays PDF Print E-mail

As the summer tourism season begins, community and business groups have expressed concern about the delay in restoring the metalwork and stonework in Uppingham market place and high street, one of the town's top visitor attractions.

The issue will feature in the Rutland Times on May 31st 2018. Decorative metalwork has been missing for over 12 months with the metalwork suppliers being blamed for the delay. Temporary tarmac patches in the paving await replacement stone.

Uppingham market place is in a Conservation Area and as such has protected status. The groups are urging prompt action by the highways authority and, if necessary, a search for alternative contractors who can meet an urgent deadline.

Tributes to the dedication and organisational skills of Jim Barry, founder and organiser of the annual Stilton Cheese Classic Vehicle Run, are being published following the news that he had died in the early hours of Tuesday May 8th 2018. Jim and his wife Joy are known throughout the classic vehicle world in the UK as organisers of the famous run, which in recent years has had its start in Uppingham in Rutland.

Commenting on the sad news, Uppingham First Secretary Ron Simpson said, "Jim's death is a huge blow to the Stilton Run team. His and Joy's fund raising efforts for charity, year after year, in organising this now nationally recognised classic vehicle event have earned them a place in history.  Many here in Uppingham loved this event with around 300 cars attending each year.  What ever happens in the future, the run will always be associated with Jim and his wife. Our thoughts are with the family."
